Water Softeners Look Different, But What Really Makes Them Different?
My 17 Years running this local company has taught me that the customers #1 fear is to pick the wrong company or wrong product. I see it again and again. But most consumers don't have the slightest idea what makes a system better. Let me help.
1. The Moving Parts Inside The Valve Are Different - which makes a difference
We formulated Atlas from years of experience treating hard Jacksonville water. We started our company using the Clack brand water softener valve, the Clack WS1 because it was the best at that time. Later we switched to our current Runxin valve that we use for Atlas. Both of these valves have moving parts inside. It's these moving parts that show up down the road as maintenance cost's. Because Clacks internal parts are rubber and plastic they require regular change outs to keep the system working properly. Currently the going rate to change these parts in a Clack Ws1 valve is around $300 parts and labor. I had a customer switch to Atlas after changing his Clack seal stack 4 times in 10 years for roughly $1000.00
Atlas uses all ceramic internal parts, which is different from Clack (and Fleck). The moving ceramic disc has channels in it that align when the disc is moved. Because it's ceramic, it never wears out. In kind, it never has to be changed and won't cost you $300 every 4 years or so, like Clack. In my opinion, this is a difference that makes it better for consumers. Kinda like buying a car with a timing chain versus a timing belt.
Internal components are critical to a water softener's operation. Their design and materials can influence long-term reliability and servicing requirements.
2. Resin Media varies by Quality - Top quality last longer than Low Quality
Included in Atlas is the higher quality 10% crosslinked resin media. It's what we use in hotels and restaurants. With proper pre-treatment 10% crosslinked resins can last 20 years, compared to 5-7 years for 8% or less crosslinked resins.
Granted, its a different term, "crosslinked". Think of it this way. It's how strong the resin bead is and how it resists degradation.
Most generic softeners, online softeners, or water softeners from a plumbing wholesale warehouse use the cheapest resin's possible inside their units. While they cost less they don't hold up very long with Jacksonville's hard chlorinated water. We have seen these cheaper resins fail in as little as 2 years in our local Florida water supply.
In our opinion water softeners using the lowest quality grade of 8% or less crosslinking should be avoided. Here's the catch. Most sales brochures don't elude to what quality of resin was used in the tank. And, it's inside the tank, you can't see it, so you won't have any idea what's inside.
At Florida Water Technologies, Inc. 10% crosslinked resin's are all we use. It significantly outlasts other resins saving you money down the road for expense "resin rebeds". (a resin rebed is s service where a company like ours replaces the old exhausted resin and re loads it with new resin)
3. UV Coated Insulating Jacket - to block UV rays and avoid tank sweating
Our trademarked Atlas Water Softener System comes with a tank jacket around the main Ion-exchange softener tank. Jacksonville FL not only has high hardness but also high UV rays and extreme temperature swings during the summer. The specialized jacket provides a layer of protection from heat and prevents oxidation caused by high UV exposure. This is important for systems that are installed inside our hot garages or if they have to be installed outside. Exposed fiberglass tanks will sweat inside your garage if unprotected (because the air is much warmer than the water inside the tank). And they will shred when exposed to sunlight. Atlas is ready for both.
All in all, our Atlas brand water softener is well equipped to soften our hard Saint Johns County FL water for a long long time costing you very little on maintenance. By using ceramic internal parts instead of rubber and plastic, 10% commercial strength crosslinked resin, and a UV coated insulated tank jacket - Atlas is a top pick.
